Surgery Options

The most common surgery options for patients considering bariatric surgery in the United States:

SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY
(Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy – VSG)

Sleeve Gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve, is the most common weight loss procedure performed today. A large portion of the stomach is removed, leaving a smaller, tube-shaped stomach about the size of a banana. This reduces the stomach’s capacity, making you feel full faster, and removes the hunger hormone, ghrelin, making you feel less hungry. Unlike other weight loss surgeries (like gastric bypass or loop duodenal switch), it does not alter the intestines. Patients typically lose up to 70% of their excess weight after 12 months.

GASTRIC BYPASS
(Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass – RYGB)

Gastric Bypass surgery makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. It is mainly a restrictive operation but also includes some malabsorption. Food intake is limited by stapling the stomach to create a small pouch. Absorption is somewhat limited by cutting and reattaching the small intestine so that the upper third of the small intestine is bypassed and the remaining portion is joined to the pouch. Patients typically lose up to 70-80% of their excess weight after 12 months and it cures 95% of Type 2 Diabetes.

LOOP DUODENAL SWITCH – SADI
(Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass – SADI-S)

The Loop Duodenal Switch is ideal for people who have severe obesity and is especially effective for patients with Type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. The procedure modifies your stomach and your small intestine and is both a restrictive procedure and a malabsorptive procedure. It also has powerful metabolic effects and reduces the hunger hormones that your stomach normally produces. Patients typically lose up to 85% of their excess weight after 12 months and it cures 95% of Type 2 Diabetes.
