Plano, TX, May 20, 2015 – As people across the country celebrated National Get Fit Don’t Sit Day on May 6, the folks at the Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery got in on the fun by playing host to a hula hoop contest.

“Research strongly indicates a connection between sitting long periods of time and increased risk of premature death from a large variety of health problems,” says Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon at the North Texas-based Nicholson Clinic, one of the top weight loss surgery centers in the country. “American Diabetes Association’s Get Fit Don’t Sit Day is designed to raise awareness of this fact while shedding light on just how easy it is to incorporate healthy movement into the daily routine. Exercise simply does not have to be grueling or boring to be impactful.”

That’s why the Nicholson Clinic helped promote healthy tips and activities to do at your desk and at work the week leading up the event, culminating with a hula hoop contest for its recognition of the national fitness event.

“It’s estimated people spend an average of five hours and 41 minutes sitting each day they report to work,” Dr. Nicholson says. “Getting up and moving at least for a few minutes every hour and a half or so can make a big difference in lowering the risks associated with sitting for long periods of time. Just stretching, doing exercises in your chair, or enjoying a change of scenery by walking around the office or outside during your lunch break can make a big difference.”

Dr. Nicholson points out that breaking up the work day with mini-breaks out of the chair can also help increase focus and productivity by giving the brain a chance to rest from the tasks at hand and getting the blood flowing.

“It’s important to limit the amount of time you spend sitting in a chair,” Dr. Nicholson says. “This day is meant to encourage everyone to get up and move – and have a little fun in the process.”

Founded by Dr. Nick Nicholson, one of the country’s leading weight loss surgeons and co-author of “Weight Loss Surgery, The Real Skinny,” the Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery offers a variety of surgical and non-surgical options to help patients gain control of their weight and their lives.
