Weight Loss Surgery Benefits: Women Have Slight Edge Says Dr. Nicholson

The overall health benefits of weight loss surgery for men and women have long been established. People who address obesity with procedures such as the gastric bypass are known to lower their risks for heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer.

Dallas, TX, Dec. 03, 2016 – The overall health benefits of weight loss surgery for men and women have long been established. People who address obesity with procedures such as the gastric bypass are known to lower their risks for heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. But, are the benefits more profound for female patients than males? A new study indicates the answer is yes, but not by much.

“Tackling obesity head-on with bariatric surgery and its associated lifestyle modifications can help both men and women alike enjoy healthier, more active lives,” says Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon at the Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery. “Women, however, do gain a slight end in lowering their overall risk for heart disease, according to researchers.”

The study Dr. Nicholson is referring to involved about 2,000 men and women who were at high risk for the development of heart disease. Significant reduction in risk was witnessed in patients of both sexes who underwent bariatric procedures to address obesity. The overall risk for women was noted to drop by an estimated 41 percent. Men enjoyed a risk reduction of about 36 percent, which is still extremely beneficial.

“The bottom line is that bariatric surgery can have tremendously strong benefits for heart health in men and women alike,” says Dr. Nicholson. “Women may just enjoy a slight edge thanks to what is believed to be an enhanced metabolic response to surgery that may promote a normalization of cardiac biochemical risk factors.”

Bariatric surgery has been strongly proven to help people who face severe obesity address their weight loss concerns while improving overall health in the process. Men and women alike typically enjoy a reduction in heart disease risks along with reductions of risks associated with obesity-related cancers, type 2 diabetes and other serious conditions. People who are obese are urged to talk to their healthcare providers about steps they can take to lose weight and keep it off.
