The Changing Landscape of Compounded Weight Loss Medications: What You Need to Know

Feb 28, 2025

For those relying on compounded weight loss medications, recent changes may feel like a major setback. With the impending unavailability of these drugs, many are left wondering what’s next for their weight loss journey. If you’re feeling frustrated or abandoned, know that you are not alone—and more importantly, you are not without options.

Why Are Compounded Weight Loss Drugs Becoming Unavailable?

According to the FDA, shortages of Wegovy® and Ozempic® (the brand name drugs for semiglutide) and Zepbound and Mounjaro (both containing the active ingredient tirzepatide) are no longer considered to be on the shortage list. Thus, the availability of compounded weight loss medications is decreasing over the next couple months as these brand-name drugs become more available. Recent regulatory shifts and supply chain issues have further impacted accessibility. While these drugs have been a helpful tool for many, the changes in availability are beyond individual control. This shift may feel disruptive, but it’s essential to focus on the solutions available to keep your progress on track.

Tirzepatide

As of February 18, 2025, 503A compounding pharmacies can no longer provide compounded tirzepatide. Outsourcing facilities, which are FDA-registered compounding pharmacies, have until March 19, 2025, to stop dispensing compounded tirzepatide.

Semaglutide

As of late February 2025, most pharmacies and physicians have until April 22, 2025, to stop making and dispensing compounded semaglutide injections. Outsourcing facilities have until May 22, 2025.
