Ryan’s Story*

Being obese is like being in a cage, trapped inside a body suit of fat that prevents you from doing all the things in life you would like to do. My wife and I came to the conclusion that we couldn’t live like this anymore, so we both signed up for a weight loss seminar with Dr. Nick. I had my surgery in April of 2013. I weighed almost 400lbs. Now, 13 months later, I am 160lbs lighter and I feel wonderful. The surgery has given me back my life.

Since the surgery, I have done many of the things I either couldn’t or wouldn’t have done before. I had stopped traveling by air, too embarrassed that I might need a seat belt extension or purchase an extra seat – but since the surgery, I have flown three times. In the past few months, we have taken our children to visit Hollywood and to experience Disney World. Imagine the satisfaction of being able to ride a roller coaster with your children! I find it is the little things that reward me: not having to worry if I will fit into the restaurant booth, or break the plastic lawn chair. I have started running, and I have never felt better in my life. I really do feel free now: free to live and enjoy my life.

When you dial 911 you expect a firefighter to come running in to save the day. What you are not looking for is an overweight fireman that needs to take a moment to catch his breath before he helps you. I had become that firefighter. I was very out of shape and I was about as unhealthy as you could be. I tried dieting and working out but it was never enough.

Following an injury on the job I made the choice to contact the Nicholson Clinic. That one phone call was the best I ever made. My life has changed. 12 weeks post-surgery I feel better than I have in 20 years. Before my surgery I could barely make it to walk a mile. I am now jogging 4-5 miles a day and since my surgery I am up to 104 miles. I have a total weight loss of about 50 pounds and still counting. I’m sorry to break it to my Chief but I will need new uniforms and gear.

If you are apprehensive about the surgery I challenge you to make the appointment with either doctor at the Nicholson Clinic. I promise all your fears will be gone and all your questions will be answered. Nicholson Clinic was the best I could have asked for. He took the time to answer every question and go over every detail. I never felt like he was rushing me to get to the next patient. To say I have had a positive experience would be such an understatement. As a father they have given me back time with my children and energy to enjoy the activities that come with teenagers. As a husband I am on the path to a healthy new me for my wife. As a firefighter I now have the energy and the stamina to respond like I did in my 20s. I no longer fear that I will not be able to do my job due to my weight.

I challenge every firefighter out there who is quietly struggling to keep up. You do not have to continue to struggle. Give Nicholson Clinic a call and I promise it will change your life. The life you save may be your own.

My family and I cannot say thank you enough to the Nicholson Clinic. You guys are the real heroes in this story.

At Thanksgiving in 2011, I was walking out of work with my boss and missed a step going outside the building and fell down. I found that I could not get up by myself. My boss went into the crouch position like he was about to lift a piano off the ground and helped me up. It was that moment that I decided I needed to lose weight.

I took a new year’s resolution at the start of the year to work out and loose weight. However, I found that my knees and ankles could not take the punishment of working out. As they swelled up and started hurting I knew I had to get surgical help. I went to see Dr. Nicholson and got the ball started and they really helped me get the approvals needed through my insurance company to get the surgery approved.

I weighed 468 lbs. when I first walked into Dr. Nick’s office. I was on an even dozen medications for hypertension, high cholesterol and diabetes. In March, I had the gastric sleeve surgery and on the day I went home from the hospital I was off all but 3 of my medications. The recovery went great and I was fully aware of what to expect thanks to Dr. Nick and his great staff. I started walking a little at a time just around my living room and kitchen. After about a month I was up to walking close to a mile a day. After 9 months, I was walking 3 to 5 miles a day loosing weight at a rapid pace. Between 9 months and one year I started jogging. Something I had not done in years. I found that I liked being outside and in the fresh air. At one year, I had lost a total of 190 lbs. was totally off all my prescription medications and was running 5K races.

Now after 2 years, I am still maintaining the 190 – 200 lbs lost and going through a pair of running shoes every two months! My life has been totally reshaped by the weight loss and I feel blessed to have been a patient of Dr. Nick Nicholson.
