Obesity drives up healthcare costs, with medications, doctor visits, sick days and more. Having weight loss surgery can save you thousands of dollars. Dr. Brian Long explains how this is possible.

Watch their story below.

Plano, TX, April, 26, 2017 – The LAP-BAND® procedure has been a popular weight-loss option in the United States since its introduction in 2001. Favored by many for its proven effectiveness and its reversible nature, this procedure has helped thousands of people lose weight. It is not, however, a panacea. Patients who have undergone LAP-BAND® procedures in the past may find the device no longer works for them or that complications, such as slippage, acid reflux or nausea have developed.

“The LAP-BAND® procedure is a very effective tool for those seeking to address weight-related concerns without the permanency involved in either the gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy procedure,” says Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon at the Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery. “The procedure does have some associated side effects that some patients may experience. That is why annual evaluations, at the minimum, are recommended. There are also side effects that may demand more immediate medical attention that may arise after the LAP-BAND® procedure is performed.”

The LAP-BAND® procedure is performed laparoscopically. It involves the placement of a band around the stomach, which effectively limits the amount of food that can be consumed at any given time. In providing a way to reduce stomach capacity, the band enables people to lose a significant percentage of their excess body weight. When coupled with lifestyle changes, such as an appropriate diet and exercise, the results can be quite pleasing.

“While many LAP-BAND® patients report strong and lasting results, that is not always the case,” says Dr. Nicholson. “Patients who feel like the band has stopped working or who witness a return of weight should seek out medical advice. Patients may also suffer from nausea, vomiting or acid reflux, which may signal slippage of the band. Seeking medical advice in these scenarios is important. Doctors can sometimes address concerns with an office procedure that refills the band. If slippage is suspected, simple surgery can restore its effectiveness.”

The LAP-BAND® procedure has helped thousands of people gain control of their weight while helping them reduce risks of diabetes, heart disease and other obesity-related health complications. Over time, the effectiveness of this tool may diminish due to slippage and other causations, making routine follow ups important.

“While enthusiasm for LAP-BAND® surgery has waned over the past few years, this option remains very viable for some people,” says Dr. Nicholson. “Anyone considering weight loss surgery is strongly encouraged to explore all the options with their healthcare provider to make the best decision to meet their personal needs. Should LAP-BAND® be selected, the procedure can produce very pleasing results. To ensure that, annual evaluations should take place and any unusual symptoms should be reported to a doctor right away.”

A Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery patient talks about the dramatic changes in his life and health.

Plano, TX, Dec. 19, 2016 – Marathon runner Tim Morgan wasn’t always the picture of health and athleticism. Last year at this time, the participant in the 2016 BMW Dallas Marathon was facing down the very real prospect of his own mortality. Only 50, he’d suffered one obesity-related heart attack and was in jeopardy of a second. After his fifth stint was placed to prevent that heart attack, Tim decided to address his weight through bariatric surgery.

The results have been dramatic.

When Tim first came to the Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery seeking help to change the course of his life, his prospects were grim. He was more than 300 pounds, had type 2 diabetes, high triglycerides, sleep apnea and knees and joints that ached with every step.

“I was very unhealthy,” Tim explains.

Tim worked with Nicholson Clinic doctors and decided to undergo surgery in April 2016. While Tim’s weight loss since then has been outstanding, more than 100 pounds off so far, it’s the changes in his life that have been most remarkable.

“I ran my first 5K in July and have been running and training for a marathon,” he says. “I never thought I would be here.”

Research has shown that bariatric surgery not only help address serious weight-related concerns, but also helps improve and even reverse obesity-related conditions.

“Studies have proven that bariatric surgery can provide an effective means to treat high blood pressure, diabetes, and many other conditions while lowering risks for heart disease, obesity-related cancers and other serious illnesses,” explains Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon at the Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery. “Stories like Tim’s, however, show the life-changing benefits losing weight can have.”

A Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery patient talks about the importance of support.

Dallas, TX, Dec. 17, 2016 – The journey to lose weight begins with the very first step, but the road ahead can be difficult for people to navigate on their own. That is especially so when obesity is a serious health concern and the overall goal seems unattainable. A team approach that includes support every step of the way can make all the difference, says Kelly, a Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery patient.

When Kelly first walked through the clinic’s doors, she was struggling with the realization that her weight affected not only her, but also her family.

“It wasn’t until I took my kids to an amusement park that I realized it wasn’t just about me,” she says. When Kelly’s size prevented her from getting on a ride, the look on her daughter’s face motivated her to take action.

“Meeting Dr. Nick (Nicholson) was wonderful,” says Kelly. “He was nonjudgmental. He really seemed to genuinely care about the patients he takes care of.”

“After working with Kelly to ascertain her goals and explore her options, she decided a gastric bypass was the right procedure for her,” says Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon at the Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery. “By taking advantage of counseling and support offered at the clinic, Kelly was well prepared for the surgery and the changes in her life that would come afterwards.”

It was the level of support provided by Dr. Nicholson and the entire staff at the clinic that surprised Kelly the most. She has friends and family who have also undergone bariatric surgery, but they walked alone without advance support, counseling and education. There was also “no follow up,” says Kelly. “That’s not the experience I wanted and that was not the way with Nicholson.”

After losing 145 pounds following her bypass, Kelly proudly reports her kids tire out faster at amusement parks than she does. “If I can do this, anybody can do this. This is a new life.”

The Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery’s founder talks about how losing weight can enhance lifespan.

Dallas, TX, Dec. 14, 2016 – The potential health benefits that bariatric surgery can produce for people who are obese involves a rather lengthy list. They all, however, add up to the potential for people to lead longer, healthier lives. A recent study related to the benefits of the gastric bypass, in fact, shows that people who address obesity with this surgical intervention are likely to see their risk of death drop rather dramatically.

“The gastric bypass procedure and other weight-loss surgery options have long been shown to lower risks associated with heart disease, diabetes and some forms of cancer,” explains Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon at the Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery. “That all adds up to a dramatic drop in the likelihood of obesity-related morbidity for patients who seek to successfully address weight-related concerns using this method.”

The study Dr. Nicholson is referring to involved about 2,700 patients who were monitored for about 10 years after undergoing bypass procedures. Researchers found that life-preserving benefits tended to appear within two years of surgery with the most significant improvements marked about four years out. People who enjoyed the highest benefits were those aged 60 and older when they had surgery and those who suffered from diabetes. Overall, the reduction of death risk for obesity-related and other health concerns dropped by about 50 percent.

“Obesity’s link with a diversity of life-limiting conditions is undeniable,” says Dr. Nicholson. “Addressing weight effectively and safely can have a strong and positive impact on overall health while potentially increasing longevity.”

The gastric bypass procedure is one of the most commonly used forms of bariatric surgery meant to address obesity. The procedure effectively shrinks the stomach’s holding capacity while reducing the body’s ability to absorb calories. It is generally reserved for patients who are considered severely or morbidly obese.
