A Life Transformed: Kathy’s Weight Loss Surgery Journey

Apr 15, 2025

There comes a moment in life when change is no longer optional—it becomes necessary. For one mother, that moment came on Mother’s Day in 2014. Looking at pictures of herself, she was faced with a truth she could no longer ignore; she needed to take control of her health if she wanted to be there for her young daughters. What followed was a journey of transformation, perseverance, and ultimately, self-love.

The Decision to Change

Before weight loss surgery, life was challenging in more ways than one. Simple joys—like running and playing with her daughters—were overshadowed by exhaustion. Shopping for clothes in regular stores wasn’t an option, and she avoided cameras at all costs. For many years, she struggled with yo-yo dieting and starting exercise routines only to fall off the wagon. Eventually, she reached a breaking point and decided, “Enough is enough. I need help.” After extensive research, she attended a seminar by Dr. Nicholson at the Nicholson Clinic, where she learned about her options. After carefully weighing the pros and cons, she proceeded with the procedure.

Choosing the Gastric Sleeve

By October 2014, she was ready. After consulting with Dr. Nicholson, they determined that the gastric sleeve procedure would be the best tool to help her achieve her weight loss goals. The decision wasn’t taken lightly—she conducted thorough research, completed all necessary pre-op testing, and ensured she was mentally and physically prepared. What stood out most was Dr. Nicholson’s openness and guidance, which gave her confidence in her choice.

The Surgery and Recovery Process

Thanks to the Nicholson Clinic, the process was straightforward. They handled the complexities of insurance and provided a clear roadmap for pre- and post-surgery requirements. While some days were more challenging than others—especially in meeting hydration and protein intake goals—she followed every instruction to the best of her ability. Over time, the process became second nature, and she learned how to fuel her body effectively.

Throughout it all, Kathy was never alone. Her husband and children stood by her side, offering unwavering support and encouragement through every step of the process. Whether it was helping with meal preparations, cheering her on as she incorporated exercise into her daily routine, or reminding her of her “why” on tough days, their love and belief in her never wavered.

A New Lease on Life

To challenge her body in new ways, she joined a walking club, which evolved into walk-run intervals, pushing herself beyond what she ever imagined possible. With the support of her family, coach and accountability partners, she ran a half-marathon in December 2015. In 2023, she decided to challenge herself again—this time by running a full marathon. For eight months, she trained, trusted the process, and in November 2024, she crossed the marathon finish line—without gaining weight. The experience reaffirmed that she could achieve anything she set her mind to.

Fast forward to today, and life is nothing short of amazing! Initially, she lost 102 pounds and then found her balance at a healthy 140 pounds. Over the past decade, she’s experienced the reality that weight loss surgery is only a tool—it still requires effort in maintaining nutrition, exercise, and mindset.

But what made the journey even more fulfilling was the love that surrounded her. Her family became her biggest cheerleaders, always reminding her of how far she had come and reinforcing the belief that she was never alone in this process.

Maintaining Success 10 Years Later

A decade after surgery, she continues to prioritize her health. Meal planning, scheduled exercise, and daily mindset work are non-negotiables. She invests in personal growth, working with mentors and continuously learning about whole-person health. By making herself a priority, she ensures she can show up as the best version of herself—not just for her, but for her family as well.

Advice for Those Considering Weight Loss Surgery

For anyone contemplating weight loss surgery, she offers this advice: knowledge is power. Understand that surgery is not a cure; it is merely a tool. Success requires a commitment to lifestyle changes, including diet, exercise, mental health, and personal growth. Ask yourself:

  • How will my habits need to change before and after surgery?
  • Can I commit to putting my health first?
  • What adjustments do I need to make to support this commitment?

Weight loss is a journey, not a destination. It takes time, patience, and consistency. Most importantly, always remember—you are worth the investment! Stay tuned for more on Kathy’s story!
