Preparing for Your Loved One’s Weight Loss Surgery

Oct 17, 2014
Weight loss surgery can certainly be a scary prospect if you are undergoing it yourself. But when a loved one is preparing for such surgery, it can be even more unnerving for those who want to offer their support but don’t know what is appropriate. If you are standing by someone who is preparing for weight loss surgery, there are many things that can be done to help put things in place for a supportive, peaceful, successful recovery.

When you are preparing yourself and your loved one for an upcoming weight loss surgery, consider doing the following:

  • Get as educated as possible about the specific procedure that your loved one is having done. It’s just as important for you to know the details of the surgery as the person having the surgery so that you can know what to expect leading up to the surgery, the day of the surgery, and immediately following.
  • Accompany your loved one to their doctor visits. It’s important that everyone is on the same page regarding their procedure and care.
  • Speaking of care, be sure you are given specific instructions regarding after-care. Most weight loss surgeries are performed as same-day procedures and patients are often able to go home the same day or within a day or two. Be sure you understand what to look for regarding any potential complications and how best to care for your patient to support proper healing.
  • Stock up on much needed items. There is a very strict protocol regarding food and liquid intake following surgery to ensure proper caloric and nutritional intake. Ask your loved one’s doctor about these restrictions and stock up on the appropriate items to be able to provide your patient with what they need.

Sometimes it’s even scarier to see someone you love prepare for and undergo surgery than it is to have a surgery yourself. But with the right preparation, you can provide the care your loved one needs to make a speedy and healthy recovery.
