Pregnancy Following Weight Loss Surgery

Oct 17, 2014

Obesity can impact all areas of your life and for women that impact can reach all the way to fertility. In fact, those who suffer with obesity are at higher risk for suffering with fertility issues. And should they become pregnant, they still face the dangers of safely carrying that pregnancy to term and remaining healthy. A pregnancy in an obese woman carries the additional risk of high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, and a host of other conditions that can be dangerous for both mom and baby.

Woman undergo weight loss surgery to take control of their health and lose the weight that can cause health issues and affect their life. Weight loss surgery does more than just allow you to lose weight, it allows you to eliminate the conditions that can sometimes go along with obesity which, in turn, can allow you to live a longer, healthier life.

Not surprisingly, many women who have been unable to get pregnant or have put off pregnancy while obese, may want to consider trying to get pregnant following weight loss surgery. And certainly a healthier weight will go a long way towards helping support a healthy, full-term pregnancy.

An important thing to keep in mind, however, is the fact that doctors typically discourage their patients from getting pregnant during the first year following surgery. This is because the greatest post-surgical weight loss happens during this first year - weight is dropping very rapidly and a specific diet is being followed. This type of rapid weight loss can can be dangerous for pregnancy.

After the first year following surgery when weight has more or less stabilized and the patient is on a more regular diet, women may consider pregnancy. Certainly getting pregnant and sustaining a healthy pregnancy will be much easier at this healthier weight.
