The Outcome of Your Weight Loss Surgery

Oct 02, 2014

A struggle with weight is a very personal journey with very personal circumstances. So it’s not surprising that weight loss surgery can impact each person very differently. Patients who enter into the decision to pursue weight loss surgery hopefully do so with the knowledge that such surgery is not a quick fix and that work must be done on their end to not only reach their goal but maintain their success for the long term.

So what can you reasonably expect following your weight loss surgery? The results can differ from person to person depending on how much weight there was to lose to begin with, what kind of surgery was performed, and how committed the patient is to adopting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If the patient is committed to doing their part through diet and exercise, they can expect to lose the majority of their excess weight during the first 18 to 24 months following surgery - about 50% to 80% of the total weight needed to lose. That means that within the first year and a half to two years following surgery, the successful weight loss surgery patient can have absolutely life changing results including increased mobility, a reduction in obesity-related diseases, improved sleep, and better overall energy and health. This success typically snowballs on itself - as the patient begins to feel better, they become more active and this increased activity speeds up continued weight loss.

All of this success absolutely depends on the weight loss surgery patient doing everything they need to do to support their health. Weight loss surgery provides the tools to lose weight, it is up to the patient to use those tools appropriately by:

    • Following all the instructions associated with recovery. A weight loss surgeon will give you all the information you need about what to expect in terms of recovery and it’s very important to follow the rules of recovery to give your body the best opportunity to heal.
    • Embarking on the appropriate diet and exercise program. This is the key to long term success after weight loss surgery. Your doctor will help you determine the best diet and exercise program - following surgery and as you start to lose weight and gain strength. Consistency is crucial to folding these new healthy habits into your life - for good.
    • Surrounding yourself with support. Whether its friends and family or others who have shared a similar weight loss experience, it’s important to have support throughout your weight loss journey following surgery. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need. Having people who understand around you can make all the difference for your emotional strength and long term success.
