Is Gastric Bypass My Only Option for Weight Loss?

Jun 30, 2014
When most people think of weight loss surgery, they think immediately of gastric bypass - the most well-known surgery and certainly the procedure that is most associated with extreme weight loss. It’s not surprising when you consider that gastric bypass was the original weight loss surgical procedure and the procedure that has received the most attention over the years.

But things have changed; there has been an ongoing evolution in weight loss surgery and not only has it changed the manner in which gastric bypass is performed, it has grown to include several other choices that also allow for weight loss success. So what are the options today for those looking to manage their battle with extreme obesity:

  • Gastric Bypass - The most restrictive of the surgical options, gastric bypass involves limiting the stomach by stapling it into a small pouch. Historically, this was a very invasive surgery that required traditional surgical procedures and an extensive stay in the hospital. Today, gastric bypass is most often performed laparoscopically - reducing the risks associated with the surgery and allowing for faster recovery times.

  • Lap-BandⓇ - The Lap-BandⓇ surgery is known as the least invasive of all the surgeries and involves an adjustable band fastened around the stomach. The band can be tightened to restrict space in the stomach and allow for the patient to feel fuller faster with less food intake. The adjustability of the band can work with patients according to their individual needs.

  • Sleeve Gastrectomy - Also referred to as Gastric Sleeve surgery, Sleeve Gastrectomy also reduces the stomach volume, by dividing it vertically. The part of the stomach that is resected is the part that is responsible for producing the hormone grehlin which affects hunger. As a result, following Gastric Sleeve surgery, not only is the stomach itself restricted, many patients also report a much reduced appetite.
